File Crypt – Free Encryptor to Protect Your Data
Review by on
How do you ensure prying eyes will not take a look at your private, sensitive data? Assuming you share your computer with others, you could for example try to hide your data. But this is not a very efficient means of protection. The hidden data could be uncovered and easily viewed. A more efficient solution would be to encrypt and password protect your data.

Once the data is encrypted, no one else can access it – unless that person provides the right password. But you are the only one who knows the password; therefore you are the only one who can access that data. Sounds great, right? If you were wondering what application can do this, I present to you the Red Zion-developed File Crypt application.

As the name so adequately points out, this application will encrypt your files. All encrypted files are password protected, meaning that they will not be decrypted unless the correct password is provided. Using the application is a relatively straightforward process since its user interface provides a simple, easy to figure out design. From the application’s user interface you can browse for the files you want to encrypt; then there’s a key field, a check-box option for deleting the source file, and a check-box option for saving your key. With a very simple design, you should not have a problem figuring out what everything does.

Speaking of using File Crypt, it should be said that the application is meant to be used on top of the Microsoft-developed Windows operating system. It should also be mentioned the fact that File Crypt is freeware – you can use it for as long as you want without paying a dime. To start using it you must first get it off the web and onto your computer. In this regard you need to know that File Crypt weighs in at less than 5MB; so it shouldn’t take long for the download to complete.

Pros
  • Easy to use
  • Encrypts and password protects files
  • Language support for English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Slovenian, Spanish

  • The key field is already populated when you decrypt the file
  • Sometimes it may not work at all
